Deleterious Constituents of Indiana Gravels

ثبت نشده
چکیده

This paper reports the results of tests on Indiana gravels ranging from good to poor in field performance in Portland cement concrete. The gravels were separated by heavy liquid flotation into various specific gravity ranges. The gravel fractions thus obtained were tested to deter mine absorption, specific gravity, degree of saturation, lithologic compo sition and durability in air entrained concrete subjected to freezing and thawing. The results show that the principal deleterious constituents of Indiana gravels are sandstones and cherts. They are characterized by low specific gravity, high absorption and degree of saturation and pro duce nondurable concrete when used as the coarse aggregate. The con crete durability can be improved by heavy media separation of the aggre gate. Greater durability is obtained as the specific gravity at which the separation is made is increased.

Phosphorus Sorption by Gravels in Lateritic Soils

t The effect of sesquioxidic i i ic gravels (>2 mm size fraction) on phosphorus sorption by two gravelly lateritic soils was investigated by phosphorus sorption experiments, X-ray diffraction, ti , autoradiography and electron microscopy. In one soil the abundance and size of gravels l decreased downslope. As the gravel content of both soils increased (13-61%), ), the proportion of large (>8 mm...

Comparison of Different Types of Media for Nutrient Removal Efficiency in Vertical Upflow Constructed Wetlands

This study investigated the efficiency of two types of media, namely, gravels and sand for their nutrient removal capabilities from wastewater. Different levels of sand depths were also experimented for their removal efficiencies. And for this purpose three laboratory scale vertical upflow constructed wetlands (S1, S2, S3) were established at PHE Laboratory, MNIT, Jaipur. S1was filled with two ...

Age Constraints for Clastic Sediments from Two Caves in the Junee-florentine Karst, Tasmania

Uranium-thorium dating of speleothems from two caves in the Junee-Florentine karst, Tasmania, provides some age constraints for associated clastic sediments including coarse dolerite-rich fluvial gravels, which underlie the three oldest dated speleothems. The results suggest minimum ages of 15 ± 5 ka, ~325 ka and >350 ka (two dates) for the gravels, implying that they are considerably older tha...

Removal of Zn(II) from electroplating effluent using yeast biofilm formed on gravels: batch and column studies

BACKGROUND Present study deals with the removal of Zn(II) ions from effluent using yeast biofilm formed on gravels. METHODS The biofilm forming ability of Candida rugosa and Cryptococcus laurentii was evaluated using XTT (2,3-bis[2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide) reduction assay and monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Confocal laser scanning mic...
